Al-Shaibani: Reconstructing Syria is the responsibility of the international community, sanctions must be completely removed

Brussels, SANA- Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Asaad al-Shaibani, said that the reconstruction of Syria is not only a national responsibility, but also the responsibility of the entire international community, noting the importance of the positive steps taken by the European Union, including the suspension of some sanctions.

“The meeting in Brussels is a moral duty towards the dilemma in Syria and a real opportunity to boost international efforts to alleviate the suffering of the Syrians,” Al-Shaibani said in a speech Monday at the 9th Brussels Donors’ Conference on Syria, adding that today’s donors’ conference comprises a real Syrian representation, as “our country has witnessed real political transformations.”

The Foreign Minister affirmed that the Syrians will not tolerate any action against Syria’s sovereignty and unity, and that the government is working to promote reconciliation and national dialogue and protect the rights of all its citizens.

He elaborated that the ousted regime exploited and misused the minority card, stressing that this card will not be allowed to be used again.

“We believe in citizenship and equal rights and duties for all citizens,” the Minster said, noting that there are threats to Syria’s security from the former regime and the militias on the borders, as well as Israeli infiltrations,” al-Shaibani said.

He hailed the positive steps taken by the European Union, including the suspension of some sanctions.

The Foreign Minister went on saying that the reconstruction of Syria is not only a national responsibility, but rather the responsibility of the entire international community, and that the Syrian government affirms its commitment to working with humanitarian partners to ensure that aid reaches those who deserve it.

Al-Shaibani called on all donor countries to actively contribute to reconstruction efforts in Syria and support sustainable development projects, adding that the return of displaced Syrians to their country requires international efforts and contributions to revitalizing the economy.
