Damascus, SANA – Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Sleiman al-Abbas addressed questions and queries by members of the People’s Assembly and reviewed the status of the oil sector in Syria during a session on Tuesday.
The Assembly members focused on the need to prevent any shortages of gas and fuel in the future, calling for ensuring that prices aren’t manipulated by distributors, and providing fuel for the people of Aleppo and other areas.
Minister al-Abbas said that fuel distribution was rationed in some provinces due to the lack of local crude oil production and the decrease in oil arriving at refineries, noting that procuring petroleum products is a large burden for the government due to stalled production and the sanctions imposed on Syria, and the priority is for providing fuel for vital sectors.
He said that the amount of fuel allocated for Aleppo province has been increased, stressing that raising fuel prices is inevitable in light of the circumstances spawned by the crisis and the lack of local production.
The Minister noted that the government allowed the private sector and specifically industrialists to procure their fuel needs independently by importation via sea and land, adding that plans for the investment of gas fields opposite the coast are underway.
