World Blood Donor Day… importance of raising awareness of donation blood, motivating voluntary donation

Damascus, SANA- World Health Organization (WHO) celebrates on June 14th every year Blood Donor Day to offer thank and gratitude to millions of people who rescue other persons and contribute to improving their lives in order to encourage more people to denote free of charge.

This day sheds light on the need of donation regularly to avoid the deficiency phenomena in hospitals and clinics.
In a statement to SANA, Director of Damascus University Blood Transfusion Center, Aliaa al-Assad said that this day is considered as chance for raising awareness about the significance of blood donation and motivating people to the voluntary donation to rescue patients’ life like thalassemia patients who need to transfuse blood once every 15 day or more.

DR.al-Assad affirmed that despite all difficulties imposed by the terrorist war on Syria, the blood transfusion centers have continued the work to provide blood to which people ask more due to war injures.
She added that the blood is provided by the donors immediately through organizing campaigns of blood donation in coordination with the civil society, governmental and private facilities to meet any need.
According to Dr.al-Assad, there are criteria for the donors, like age from 18 to 60 year, hemoglobin for females from 12 to 14, while for males from 14 to 16 and each donor is allowed to donate one time every 3 months for male while once each 4 months for females.

She also noted that every donor’s blood is tested before transfusing it to another one to ensure his/her safety from lever Inflammation, BC, and AIDS.
The doctor indicated that in light of the precautionary measures to confront coronavirus, the medical cadres have taken all enough healthy measures in order to organize the donation blood and avoid crowd, continued distinction and safety distance among the donors at blood collection room and wearing the mask by the donors and healthy cadres.
