Damascus, SANA – Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Fayssal Mikdad said that Russia’s firm stance in supporting the Syrian state aims at achieving a power balance that allows it to tackle the counterterrorism file and to produce real data towards a political solution for the crisis in Syria, refuting talks about a military Russian presence on ground.
In a statement to Russia Today TV on Thursday, Mikdad said that the main goal of such rumors is to prolong the presence of terrorism to serve the US and Israel in the region and outside it as well as to make a cover-up over the failing alliance established by the USA.
Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister clarified that the Russian presence is limited to advisers in the framework of the Syrian-Russian military agreements.
He continued to say that the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Wednesday Moscow supported Syria in the past and it will support it in the future. “This strategic approach is governing the Syrian-Russian relations,” Mikdad added.
Yesterday, Zakharova said that Russia has never hidden the fact of military-technical cooperation with Syria, adding “we never made a secret out of our military-technical cooperation with Syria. We have long supplied arms and military equipment to Syria. We are doing it in compliance with existing contracts and in full compliance with international law.
