Attempts of intervention in Syria’s domestic affairs are a flagrant violation of UN charter and international law

Damascus, SANA-Syria reiterated yesterday, through its Foreign Minister, Mr. Asaad al-Shaibani, during a joint press conference with his Bahraini Counterpart Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid al-Zayani in Manama, its commitment to the unity of its territory and people, and its absolute rejection of any foreign interference that seeks to divide or disintegrate it.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates on April 30, it was emphasized that “the Syrian Arab Republic categorically rejects all forms of foreign interference in its internal affairs, and considers the recent calls launched by outlaw groups that participated in acts of violence on Syrian territory, to demand so-called international protection, are illegitimate and completely rejected.”

Today, repeated Israeli attacks on Syria, desperate attempts to interfere in its affairs, and attempts to ignite discord among its people are a reminder of the importance of returning to the core principles and concepts of international law, which categorically prohibit all forms of foreign intervention and affirm respect for the sovereignty and unity of states.

Since establishing  the United Nations, the principle of the sovereignty and independence of states has been emphasized, and interference in their internal affairs has been prohibited and rejected.

The United Nations General Assembly has also adopted numerous resolutions since its establishment, calling on states not to interfere in the internal affairs of other states and has considered intervention as an act that has no legitimacy and must be condemned.

Syria has suffered greatly over the past decades from foreign interventions; Israel occupied the Golan Heights, displaced its people, and destroyed their villages, replacing them with settlements for its own immigrants from around the world.

Meanwhile, the former regime sought to attract foreign intervention from Iran and Russia to support it in its confrontation with the Syrian people, that led to hundreds of thousands of casualties, widespread destruction and the displacement of millions of Syrians.

All this data indicate the necessity of being aware of the danger of foreign intervention in our country’s internal affairs, acting with determination in unity, solidarity and independent decision-making, exposing and opposing methods and tools based on international law and the United Nations Charter, by raising the consciousness of our people, by opposing attempts at discord and separatism.
