Safadi, US Secretary of State Rubio discuss regional escalation, security prospects

Amman, March 27 (SANA)   Jordan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ayman Safadi, discussed with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio the serious escalation in the Middle East and prospects for restoring security and stability, in addition to bilateral relations.

According to Jordan’s state news agency Petra, the discussions took place during a phone call on Thursday, during which the two sides reviewed a number of issues of mutual interest.

During the call, Rubio reiterated Washington’s condemnation of “Iranian attacks targeting Jordan and other Arab and Islamic countries”, and praised the Kingdom’s role in promoting regional security and stability.

On his part, Safadi stressed the importance of Jordanian-U.S. relations and affirmed the commitment to continuing efforts to develop them.

Earlier on Thursday, Rubio said it was in the interest of all member states of the Group of Seven to push toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz, which he said Iran is effectively closing at present. Speaking ahead of his trip to France to attend a meeting of G7 foreign ministers, Rubio said there had been progress in talks with Iran, noting that “intermediary countries were relaying messages” and describing the process as “ongoing,” according to Agence France-Presse.
