Tokyo, Feb. 24 (SANA) Japan is preparing to launch the world’s first wooden satellite, LignoSat, in an effort to reduce space debris and limit the environmental impact of conventional satellites burning up upon re-entry.

According to The Daily Galaxy, the project is a collaboration between Kyoto University and Sumitomo Forestry. The satellite, made from magnolia wood, is designed to test wood as an alternative to aluminum, which can release particles that linger in the upper atmosphere for years after re-entry.

Previous studies, including research published in Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences, have shown that certain types of wood can withstand harsh space conditions. Wood samples tested aboard the International Space Station for nearly a year showed minimal degradation, largely due to the absence of oxygen and microorganisms in space.

Researchers say the experiment could pave the way for more environmentally friendly satellite materials, supporting sustainability in the growing space sector.
