Homs, May 15 (SANA) The ancient city of Palmyra received one of its largest student tourism visits in 15 years on Friday, with 550 students enrolled in tourism and hospitality training programs touring the UNESCO-listed site alongside a number of foreign visitors, in an event organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and the General Authority for Tourism and Hotel Training.
The tour covered Palmyra’s major archaeological sites and landmarks, including the ancient theatre, the temple, the Colonnaded Street, the baths, and Palmyra Castle. Students from Gilgamesh Training Center, divided into ten groups under the supervision of licensed tour guides, received field briefings on the city’s civilizational and cultural heritage.
Director General of Gilgamesh Center Ayham Hijazi said the tour is part of the center’s external field program for second-year students, aimed at connecting them with Syria’s archaeological heritage and strengthening their ties to its historic sites. He described Palmyra as “the memory of Syrian civilization” and noted that the students’ engagement during the visit was remarkable.
Palmyra is among the world’s most significant archaeological cities, listed on UNESCO‘s World Heritage List for its temples, tombs, colonnaded streets, and architectural landmarks spanning multiple historical eras. It served throughout history as a major commercial and cultural hub on the Silk Road.
