EU activates Copernicus Satellite System to aid Syria’s firefighting operations

Brussels, SANA–The European Union announced Wednesday the activation of the Copernicus system to support ongoing efforts to combat wildfires in Syria’s Latakia countryside.

The EU’s Copernicus program utilizes a wide array of satellites to process data related to disasters, climate change, agriculture, and more—collecting and analyzing this information to produce reliable and actionable insights.

In a post on the platform X, EU Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness, and Crisis Management, Hajja Lahbib, stated: “The wildfires raging in Syria have displaced thousands and caused significant damage to vital services and rural communities amid difficult humanitarian conditions.” She added, “The European Union has activated the Copernicus Emergency Mapping Service to support local response efforts through satellite imagery.”
