From Recovery to Resurgence: Damascus International Airport undergoes extensive rehabilitation

Damascus, SANA–Damascus International Airport has undergone a comprehensive redevelopment process launched immediately after Syria’s liberation. The upgrades span all areas of the facility, aiming to restore its status as a strategic and vital hub in the region. This transformation has led to the gradual return of Arab and international airlines, with thousands of passengers now traveling through the airport each day.

Alaa Sallal, Director of Public Relations at the Syrian Civil Aviation Authority, told SANA that the rehabilitation efforts included runway maintenance, restructuring of the airport’s internal terminal, upgrades to surveillance camera systems and technical equipment, and a complete replacement of baggage scanners. The internal communications network was also modernized, and critical malfunctions in communication systems—particularly in the control tower—were addressed. Additionally, ground gates and passenger boarding bridges were refurbished to meet modern service standards.

He noted that new navigation systems were installed at the runway thresholds, and the full rehabilitation of the “Bravo” runway was completed. The airport’s lighting system was also upgraded to ensure safe landings during adverse weather conditions. He added that the airport is preparing to install its first modern radar system in collaboration with a specialized Turkish company, as part of a broader plan to deploy three radars across Syria for full airspace coverage.
