UN official welcomes Syria step to reveal the whereabouts of thousands of forcibly miss

Geneva, SANA-Chairman of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria, Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro, welcomed the establishment of the National Transitional Authority and the National Authority for Missing Persons which are expected to help reveal the fate of the more than 100,000 Syrians estimated to have been forcibly disappeared or gone missing.

“It is expected to uncover the truth about systematic violations like arbitrary detention, torture and ill-treatment, and about widespread attacks which killed hundreds of thousands of civilians, “The United Nations News website quoted Pinheiro as saying in a speech before the fifty-ninth session of the Human Rights Council held in Geneva.

“The repeated commitments of the authorities to protect the rights of everyone in Syria without discrimination are encouraging, and should be met with the necessary support from the international community,” he added.
