Pedersen welcomes decree forming supreme committee for people's assembly elections

New York, SANA-UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, welcomed the decree issued by President Ahmad al-Sharaa, forming the Supreme Committee for People’s Assembly Elections.

In a post on the platform “X,” Pedersen described the decree as an important step aligned with the constitutional declaration, which stipulates the formation of a new People’s Assembly as a transitional legislative authority, with two-thirds of its members elected directly.

He encouraged the Supreme Election Committee to make substantial efforts toward inclusivity, transparency, and openness in the process of forming the People’s Assembly, ensuring it serves as a foundation for political consensus.

Pedersen also emphasized the importance of measures that enable effective participation and representation of women in this process.

Additionally, he expressed his eagerness to engage with Syrians from all walks of life to hear their perspectives on these developments and their broader aspirations regarding the political process.

President al-Sharaa issued Presidential Decree No. 66 of 2025 two days ago, establishing the Supreme Committee for People’s Assembly Elections. The committee is tasked with overseeing the formation of electoral subcommittees, which will elect two-thirds of the assembly members.
