German Foreign Ministry: Lifting Sanctions on Syria will help Syrians rebuild their cou

Berlin, SANA-The German Foreign Ministry has affirmed that lifting sanctions on Syria will allow its citizens to take charge of the country’s reconstruction process.

Annika Clasen-Edris, Spokesperson for the German Foreign Office for the Middle East and North Africa, said in a televised interview with Al Arabiya Al Hadath that Germany is committed to supporting Syria’s transformation. She highlighted Germany’s pledge at the Brussels Conference on Syria, where it committed €300 million to assist Syrians.

Edris expressed satisfaction with the agreement reached with the European Union to lift all previous economic sanctions, while clarifying that Germany will maintain security-related sanctions. She noted that restrictions will remain in place against individuals associated with the former regime and Syria’s chemical weapons program.

She described Syria’s political transition following years of dictatorship and conflict as a historic opportunity and a significant challenge. She emphasized that the new Syrian government must now lead the country toward lasting peace, inclusive governance, and addressing past violations.

Edris concluded by stating that Germany and the European Union are closely monitoring developments in Syria.
