We hope the lifting of sanctions on Syria would facilitate recovery efforts, says UN of

Geneva, SANA- Edem Wosornu, Director of Operations and Advocacy for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, expressed hope that the lifting of US and European sanctions on Syria would facilitate relief, recovery, and development efforts.

“I have witnessed hope among the Syrian people after years of suffering and hardship,” Wosornu said at a press conference of UN agencies in Geneva.

She added that since December 2024, there has been an encouraging trend in the return of refugees and displaced persons, with more than one million internally displaced persons returning to their areas of origin and more than half a million returning from neighboring countries.

Wosornu noted that it is essential to overcome barriers to return, such as inadequate services, lack of livelihood opportunities, and the threat of unexploded ordnance.
