France supports a decision to lift European economic sanctions on Syria

Paris, SANA- French Foreign Ministry affirmed Paris’ full support for the historic decision to lift European economic sanctions on Syria.

“Since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, France has always been at the forefront of initiating changes to the European Union’s sanctions policy toward Syria”, the ministry posted a statement on its website, articulating that this European decision should allow Syria and the Syrians to regain the path to prosperity, less than six months after the start of the transition.

The Ministry indicated that this European decision came as a reminder of the continued commitment of the European Union, which since 2011 has stood by the Syrians who fought for their freedom and dignity.

The sanctions were imposed at that time on the Assad family, its supporters, and the economic sectors that were ensuring the survival of a barbaric regime, stressing that The European Union and its member states have, over the past fifteen years, been among the first to provide humanitarian aid to Syria and the Syrian people.

The ministry concluded its statement by saying: “France affirms its readiness to cooperate with the Syrian authorities to contribute to rebuilding a new, peaceful Syria that respects its diversity, free from any harmful foreign interference.”
