Int’l Cooperation Commission, UNDP discuss launching development work

Damascus, SANA-The acting head of Planning and Int’l Cooperation Commission, Musab Badawi, discussed with the Director of the Regional Center at the UNDP Programme in Jordan, Dr. Mary Kawar, and the accompanying delegation the future work plan to launch development work in Syria for the current year, according to priorities and needs.

In a statement to SANA correspondent, Badawi stressed that Syria’s needs are great at the present time, which requires various international organizations and the UNDP to provide more support and assistance to rebuild and rehabilitate various sectors, educational, health and service, as were destroyed during the former regime, and to provide healthy housing for the displaced people living in the camps.

Badawi pointed out that the priority is to lift the sanctions imposed on Syria so that it can implement new construction plans and open up investment in developmental, economic and industrial fields.
He noted that work will be done in coordination with ministries and institutions to provide the necessary statistics and information that will help the programme implement work plans.

Dr. Kawar, affirmed in a similar statement that the program’s work aims to directly impact the improvement of people’s lives and provide basic services, noting the endeavor to launch a new initiative, in coordination with various Syrian ministries and institutions, to develop a plan to determine priorities over a period of five years, targeting the sectors most in need.

Deputy Resident Representative of the UNDP, Mohammed Madawi, pointed out that there are ($50 million) allocated for development work in Syria, and he aspires to obtain more funds in the future.

He added that the programme’s work focuses on securing livelihoods, providing job opportunities for youth, and supporting the services and environment sector in coordination with national authorities and civil society to determine priorities, develop plans and implement them.
