New York, Sept. 23 (SANA) French President Emmanuel Macron reaffirmedFrance’s commitment to supporting Syria in restoring its full sovereignty and territorial unity during an address to the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday.
“We must not disappoint the revolution in Syria,” Macron said. “France has supported free Syria, and efforts must continue so that Syria can regain its sovereignty and unity in full.”
Macron also reiterated France’s support for the United Nations and the multilateral system, warning against disregarding international law and calling for reform of the U.N. Security Council, including greater representation for African countries.
Turning to regional developments, Macron said reopening the Strait of Hormuz was an international priority, stressing the need to ensure freedom of navigation and energy flows. He said Paris and Washington were working on a draft Security Council resolution to establish an international mission to safeguard navigation through the waterway.
Macron also called for action over the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza and the occupied West Bank and reaffirmed France’s efforts to advance negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.
Earlier Tuesday, President Ahmad al-Sharaa met Macron on the sidelines of the General Assembly, where they discussed bilateral ties, ways to strengthen cooperation and regional and international developments.
