Damascus, Sept. 9 (SANA) Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence service is now directly available in Syria without the need for a virtual private network (VPN), the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology announced Wednesday.

The ministry said on its Telegram channel that the move enables users in Syria to directly access one of the world’s leading AI services after years of restrictions that limited access to a number of international digital services and platforms due to sanctions imposed on Syria under the former regime.

The development comes amid changes in Syria’s telecommunications and information technology sector and a gradual opening to global technology services and platforms, expanding users’ options for AI tools and digital services.

Gemini uses generative artificial intelligence technologies and allows users to perform a range of tasks, including processing text, answering questions, summarizing and analyzing content, generating content and working with different types of information, depending on the services and features available in each version.

On July 9, Communications and Information Technology Minister Abdul Salam Haykal said Syria was moving closer to ending its technological isolation and overcoming international restrictions, noting that the need to use VPNs to access global applications and services would soon become a thing of the past.
