Syria welcomes UN consensus adoption of Dec. 19 for women searching for missing

Damascus, Aug. 31 (SANA)   The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates welcomed the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption by consensus of a resolution designating December 19 as an international day to honor women searching for the missing.

The ministry stated that the initiative honors the struggle of women who bore the burden of searching for missing family members while upholding their rights to truth, justice, and non-repetition.

The draft resolution resulted from collaborative work between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates and the National Commission for Missing Persons (NCMP), drawing on the lived experiences of thousands of Syrian families. It incorporated direct contributions from family groups submitted during consultative meetings held by the ministry and the authority, recognizing the exceptional role of Syrian women in searching for the missing, preserving memory, and bringing family voices to international forums.

Syria affirmed that the initiative—encompassing core guarantees to truth, justice, and protection against enforced disappearance—reflects its commitment to translating the suffering of Syrians into international humanitarian and diplomatic action. The ministry noted that the scope of the framework extends beyond national borders to include women searching for the missing across the world.

The ministry added that the resolution marks Syria’s return to an active role in international forums following decades of opaque policies under the deposed regime. It represents a key milestone in Syria’s diplomatic trajectory, centered on initiative, openness, international consensus-building, and leveraging Syrian multilateral engagement in service of shared humanitarian causes.
