Latakia, Aug. 31 (SANA) A two-day charity market opened Sunday in Latakia, on Syria’s Mediterranean coast, bringing together about 50 participants to support women’s economic empowerment and raise funds toward surgeries for orphaned children.
The “Bye Bye Summer” market, organized by the Haya Charity Foundation at the Afamia Rotana Resort and Hotel, features household goods, handicrafts and other handmade products created by women and small-business owners.
The event gives participants a platform to showcase their products, connect directly with customers and expand their marketing opportunities, helping them sustain their businesses and generate income.
Mahmoud Haj Ibrahim, director of Social Affairs and Labor in Latakia, told SANA that the market features a wide range of products made by women, with some demonstrating artistic and technical skills that make them competitive in the local market.
He said the participating projects provide their owners with a source of income that helps them meet their needs and provides a return for the time and effort invested in their work.
Hiyam Ahmad Sheikh Youssef, chairwoman of the Haya Charity Foundation’s board of trustees, said the event aims to support Syrian women producers and encourage them to continue developing their businesses, strengthening their economic independence and role in society.
She said part of the proceeds will help fund surgeries for orphaned children whose families face financial hardship, adding that supporting such cases has been central to the foundation’s work since it began operating in 2025.
Among those participating for the first time is Qamar Fares, who is showcasing interior design, painting and resin art. She told SANA that her passion for art encouraged her to join the market to introduce her work and reach a wider audience.
Al-Mahdi Milyani, founder of a perfume brand, said his first participation combines commercial and community goals by connecting brands directly with consumers, promoting handmade products and highlighting women’s role in the community.
Latakia regularly hosts charity and family markets with support from official and community organizations to assist small producers and craftspeople.
The Haya Charity Foundation works in volunteer and humanitarian services, particularly supporting widows, orphans and people with disabilities. Its activities include medical care, education, economic empowerment, development and housing.
