Damascus, Aug. 21 (SANA) Minister of Information Khaled Zaarour said Friday that the 13th black anniversary of the chemical massacre in Damascus’ two Ghoutas remains a painful reminder of one of the gravest crimes committed by the former regime against Syrians.
In a post on X on Friday, Minister Zaarour said: “13 years ago, Syrians awoke to one of the most horrific crimes committed by the ousted regime, when it targeted the two Ghoutas of Damascus with internationally prohibited chemical weapons”, noting that the attack killed more than 1,100 people, including over 100 children, and injured around 6,000 others.
He described the anniversary as a heavy memory for every Syrian and recalled the suffocating night experienced by residents of the two Ghoutas, saying it remains a testimony to the ousted regime’s brutality against Syrians.
Zaarour stressed that the sacrifices of the Syrian people remain living evidence of the brutality of the era of tyranny and crime, placing a historic and humanitarian responsibility on all to pursue perpetrators and hold them accountable.
He underlined that building a new Syria requires justice, freedom and the protection of human dignity under the rule of law.
The ousted regime carried out a chemical attack using sarin gas against Damascus’ Ghoutas on Aug. 21, 2013, killing more than 1,400 civilians, including children and women, and injuring thousands in one of the worst crimes committed against Syrians.
