Tartous, Aug. 18 (SANA) Three Syrian Electricity Company workers were killed Tuesday in an explosion during maintenance work at the Baniyas Thermal Power Plant in Tartous province.
Alaa Sawda, head of the company’s Public Relations and Media Department, told SANA the explosion occurred while a component of a hydrogen tank was being replaced. He said the plant remained operational and was not affected by the blast.
Tartous Governorate said Civil Defense teams responded to the incident and dealt with its aftermath. Baniyas District Director Omar Mansour inspected the site and was briefed on the circumstances of the explosion, while relevant authorities continued to follow up on the incident and complete necessary procedures.
Earlier Tuesday, the Tartous Health Directorate’s media office told SANA that three fatalities had been brought to Baniyas Hospital following the explosion.
The Ministry of Energy mourned the Syrian Electricity Company workers killed while performing their duties and extended condolences to their families and colleagues.
