New York, July 2 (SANA) The inaugural session of Syria’s new People’s Assembly, scheduled for next week, marks an important milestone in the country’s political transition, U.N. Deputy Special Envoy for Syria Claudio Cordone said on Wednesday.

In a statement issued by his office, Cordone said the United Nations stands ready to support the People’s Assembly in carrying out its legislative responsibilities, describing the body as an important institution in advancing a peaceful, inclusive, democratic and sovereign future for Syria.

He noted that President Ahmad al-Sharaa had appointed 70 members to the assembly on Wednesday, joining 137 members who had previously been selected through indirect elections.

Cordone said the assembly’s members would play a central role in proposing, reviewing, debating and passing legislation needed during what he described as a critical phase of Syria’s institutional transition.

He added that the latest appointments increased women’s representation in the assembly to just over 10 percent, stressing that the success of the transitional process depends on the meaningful participation of Syrian women and all segments of society.

Cordone called for continued efforts to ensure that state institutions during the transitional period reflect Syria’s diverse society and provide meaningful opportunities for participation by all communities.

He said the assembly faces significant responsibilities, including strengthening the legislative framework, supporting accountability and national dialogue, advancing transitional justice, and contributing to preparations for a permanent constitution and inclusive elections at the end of the transitional period.

Earlier on Wednesday, President al-Sharaa issued a decree appointing the members of the new Syrian People’s Assembly.
