Damascus, June 17 (SANA) Syria’s Attorney General, Judge Hassan al-Turba, said on Wednesday that enforcing the law and prosecuting major criminals before Syrian courts is the proper path towards achieving transitional justice, stressing that court proceedings are at the heart of the process.

In a statement to SANA, al Turba said accountability remains a key pillar of transitional justice, noting that the Ministry of Justice is working with the Ministry of Interior, the National Commission for Transitional Justice and the National Commission for Missing Persons to pursue those responsible for violations against the Syrian people and bring them before the courts.

He said authorities have taken measures to prevent suspects from fleeing the country, including issuing arrest warrants in absentia and pursuing fugitives through Interpol, international agreements and available diplomatic channels.

Al Turba added that witness protection measures have been put in place to encourage testimony and that cooperation with international organizations is helping support transitional justice efforts through technical assistance, training and capacity building.

He noted that victims have the right to seek compensation for material damages, while courts have the authority to award redress based on the available evidence.

Al Turba stressed that prosecuting major criminals is not merely a judicial procedure, but a key step toward achieving transitional justice, supporting civil peace and advancing national reconciliation.
