New York, June 13 ( SANA) Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Olabi, announced on Saturday that Syria has joined the “Group of Friends for combating Technology- facilitated Trafficking in Persons.”
The move came during a meeting convened by the delegation of the Republic of Korea and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
Olabi emphasized that the Syrian government decided to accept the invitation to join the group, given the suffering endured by the Syrian people in recent decades, including human trafficking and the exploitation of their plight.
“Due to its history and its strategic geographical location connecting transit routes, Syria has gained experience in combating terrorism and transnational crime, including the captagon trade and human trafficking, in cooperation with the international community,” Olabi said.
He affirmed Syria’s readiness to work with all member states of the group to strengthen efforts to combat those crimes.
“Group of Friends for combating Technology- facilitated Trafficking in Persons” is an international framework for dialogue and cooperation among UN Member States.
It aims to strengthen efforts to combat human trafficking patterns that exploit modern technologies and digital platforms for the recruitment, exploitation, transportation, and control of victims.
