Geneva, June 10 (SANA) The General Federation of Trade Unions in Syria held a series of bilateral meetings with Arab and international trade union leaders on the sidelines of the 114th session of the International Labour Conference in Geneva.

The discussions were led by Abdelalim Al-Bakkour, President of the General Federation of Trade Unions in Syria, and focused on strengthening joint trade union cooperation and expanding frameworks for institutional exchange.

Meetings included talks with Fayez Al-Mutairi, Director-General of the Arab Labour Organisation, as well as several regional and international trade union figures, including Pier Paolo Leonardi, Nasser Al-Jarid, head of the Saudi labour committee, Fayez Rashdan Al-Azmi, President of the Kuwait Workers Union, and Khaled Al-Fanatasheh, head of the Jordanian labour federation.

The talks focused on expanding cooperation mechanisms between trade unions, enhancing the exchange of expertise, and launching joint training programmes and workshops in vocational training, occupational safety and health. Participants also stressed the importance of coordination in regional and international labour forums.

Al-Bakkour said that openness to international trade union experiences represents a strategic direction for the Syrian federation, aimed at improving institutional performance and strengthening the role of labour organisations in addressing economic and social challenges.

The conference began earlier this week and runs until June 12, bringing together government, employer and worker representatives from the 187 member states of the International Labour Organisation.

The International Labour Conference is the ILO’s highest decision-making body, held annually to discuss labour issues, social justice, and international labour standards.
