Damascus, May.21 (SANA) Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates announced Thursday that the Syrian Arab Republic has joined “the Global Initiative to Galvanize Political Commitment to International Humanitarian Law.”

The step reflects the commitment of the new Syria to strengthen its responsible and active engagement in the international system and to consolidate respect for the principles of international law and international humanitarian law.

“This decision comes in fulfillment of the sacrifices and humanitarian suffering of the Syrian people, which was a direct result of the grave and systematic violations committed by the deposed regime against the Syrian people. It embodies the approach of the new Syria, which is based on respect for international law to translate this commitment into practical steps and effective diplomatic efforts,” Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

It added that Syria’s access to this initiative reflects its sincere desire to actively contribute to international efforts aimed at enhancing respect for international humanitarian law.
