Idlib, May 1 (SANA)     A 10-year-old child was killed on Friday after a landmine exploded in Kherbet Eljoz camps in the western countryside of Idlib.

SANA’s correspondent in Idlib reported that the child was playing with an unexploded landmine, a remnant of war, when it detonated, killing him instantly.

Landmines and unexploded ordnance continue to cause civilian casualties intermittently across Syria, with children among the most affected. In March, three people, including two children, were killed and eight civilians injured in an explosion at a site containing war remnants in the city of al-Atarib in the western countryside of Aleppo.

According to statistics released by the Syrian Ministry of Defense on the occasion of the International Day for Mine Awareness, engineering units have dismantled and destroyed more than 110,000 landmines and unexploded ordnance across Syrian provinces since the beginning of 2026 through early April.

The United Nations designated April 4 as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action in 2005 to promote efforts to eliminate landmines and support affected communities.
