Damascus, April 25 (SANA)     Syria’s National Commission for the Missing said on Saturday that the arrest of criminal Amjad Yousef and the detention of others involved in serious violations mark a step forward in efforts to strengthen accountability and determine the fate of missing persons.

Spokesperson Hazar Saqbani told SANA that identifying victims is a complex and technical process that cannot rely on assumptions, stressing that conclusions require forensic analysis, comparison and the completion of technical procedures.

She said the commission’s role is primarily humanitarian and technical rather than judicial, focusing on documenting and organizing information that could support future accountability processes.

Saqbani added that the commission is continuing to collect testimonies and evidence in line with recognized standards, while coordinating with relevant authorities to ensure such material can be used in future legal proceedings.

She said protecting the rights of missing persons and their families remains central to the commission’s work, alongside safeguarding privacy and providing psychosocial support where needed.

Syria’s Interior Ministry announced on Friday the arrest of Amjad Yousef, identified as a principal perpetrator in the 2013 Tadamon massacre in Damascus.
