Damascus, April 4 (SANA) – Syria’s Defense Minister Maj. Gen. Murhaf Abu Qasra on Saturday paid tribute to the Syrian Arab Army’s engineering units, emphasizing their sacrifices as they carry out dangerous demining operations across the country.
In a statement, Abu Qasra said the army’s engineering corps has cleared more than 110,000 landmines and explosive remnants of war since the beginning of 2026, underscoring the scale of the task and the risks involved.
He praised the units for continuing their work under hazardous conditions to secure areas and protect civilians.
“We greatly appreciate the daily efforts made by the engineering corps of the Syrian Arab Army to protect our people and secure areas,” he said.
The minister highlighted the human cost of these operations, announcing that two engineers were martyred and several others wounded while carrying out their duties earlier Saturday.
“It adds to the pain today that we have lost two of our heroes from the military engineering units, while several others were injured while performing their duty,” he said.
Abu Qasra said such losses reflect the dangers faced by demining teams working to remove hidden explosives and make communities safe again.
“Their sacrifices will remain a testament to the honor of this mission and to the price our men pay so Syrians can live in safety,” he added.
Demining operations continue across several provinces, where unexploded ordnance poses a persistent threat to civilians and returning residents, making the work of army engineers both critical and high-risk.
