Sweida, March 26 (SANA) Sweida province marked on Thursday the anniversary of the passing of Sultan Pasha al-Atrash, the leader of the Great Syrian Revolt, with a national event held in the town of al-Soura al-Sughra in the northern countryside. The gathering brought together official and community figures to honor his legacy and reaffirm the values of dignity and national unity.
Sweida Governor Mustafa al-Bakkour said the occasion highlights the enduring legacy of al-Atrash and his fellow revolutionaries, who made historic sacrifices for a united Syria. He stressed that the people of Sweida have always upheld a strong national identity and remain committed to Syria’s territorial unity.
Hassan al-Atrash, Emir of the ‘Ira area, noted that commemorating the leader’s passing on March 26 sends a clear message from Sweida: a firm commitment to national identity and rejection of any attempts to divide the country. He recalled al-Atrash’s call for unity under the slogan, “Religion is for God and the nation is for all.
Culture Minister Mohammad Yassin al-Saleh said the event reflects Syrians’ appreciation for al-Atrash’s role in opposing partition and supporting uprisings across the country. He added that efforts are ongoing to strengthen national cohesion and stability.
Sultan Pasha al-Atrash (1891–1982) led the Great Syrian Revolt, launched from Jabal al-Arab (Sweida) on July 21, 1925, against French colonial rule, consistently advocating for a unified Syria.
