Damascus, March 4 (SANA)The Ministry of Communications and Technology announced on Wednesday that a final amicable settlement has been reached with the global MTN Group. This agreement organizes the group’s exit from the Syrian market and clears the path for new strategic investments in the mobile telecommunications sector.
The settlement was announced following a high-level meeting between the Minister of Communications and Technology, Abdul Salam Haykal, and the President and CEO of MTN Group, Ralph Mupita. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) currently being held in Barcelona, Spain.
To ensure a seamless transition, MTN Syria will continue to operate the network until a new operator takes over, guaranteeing that services for all subscribers remain unaffected during the handover phase.
Minister Haykal emphasized that this agreement reflects the approach of “New Syria” in dealing with international investors based on transparency, professionalism, and the rule of law. The upcoming license is expected to significantly elevate the quality and stability of telecommunications services, meeting the evolving needs and aspirations of the Syrian people.
Furthermore, the Ministry noted its ongoing efforts to resolve other legal obstacles and navigate U.S. export restrictions that impact the telecommunications sector. Yesterday, the Ministry officially launched a global competition for the new mobile license to replace MTN Syria, inviting international firms to participate in the nation’s digital transformation.
