Riyadh, Feb. 27 (SANA) – A Syrian Energy Ministry delegation, led by Deputy Minister for Water Resources Osama Abu Zaid and Deputy Minister for Planning Ibrahim al-adhaan, visitid the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on Friday and held talks regarding technical aid for Syria’s water sector, including study preparation for strategic projects, on-site engineering teams, and capacity-building for technical staff.
The ministry said discussions also covered modern technologies for water network operations, metering and control systems, and localizing solutions to boost efficiency and cut losses.
Syria emphasized specialized training and expertise transfer in governance, resource management, and facility operations to prepare national institutions for future challenges in this vital sector.
The group, which included General Water Resources Authority Director Ahmad al-Kawwan, reviewed Syria’s water sector realities and sustainability issues with Saudi officials. They explored Saudi regulatory models for institutional separation, performance gains, and water policy frameworks.

The delegation toured Saudi advanced water management sites, including the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture; Shuaibah desalination plant, where they studied production, operations, maintenance, quality controls, and private-sector partnerships; pumping stations to Taif, focusing on high-elevation pumping, pressure management, and energy efficiency for long-distance networks; and the Water Academy’s training programs.
Visits extended to industrial facilities like SMC for smart water meters and remote monitoring, and Amiantit for pipes, valves and water fittings. The team saw these as practical foundations for adapting expertise, localizing industries, and advancing Syria’s water infrastructure and services.
The talks follow February 7 strategic pacts—overseen by President Ahmed al-Sharaa—covering aviation, telecoms, infrastructure, water and real estate, marking the broadest cooperation since bilateral ties resumed.
