Floods wash away bridge in Jabal al‑Turkman, cause widespread damage in rural Lattakia

Lattakia, Feb. 8 (SANA) – Heavy rainfall and flash floods in Lattakia Province swept away a bridge on the northern Nahr El Kabir River connecting the villages of al‑Sarraaf and al‑Durra in Jabal al‑Turkman area, causing significant damage to roads and surrounding terrain.

Mustafa Joulha, director of the northern district in Lattakia, said the volume of rainfall was unprecedented, with water flow in al‑Sarraaf exceeding 450 cubic meters per second. The surge carried tree branches and debris that clogged the dam structure, forcing water to spill over its sides and erode the surrounding soil, cutting off access roads in al‑Sarraaf and nearby areas.

Joulha added that the floods also blocked several rainwater drainage channels and triggered severe soil erosion. Emergency teams and technical crews from the Water Resources Directorate, working alongside the Agriculture and Public Services departments, have been deployed to clear debris, assess damage, and reopen affected roads.

The Water Resources Directorate had warned on Saturday of potential flooding along the northern Great River due to the intense rainfall, urging residents to exercise caution and avoid riverbanks.
