Idleb, Feb. 8 (SANA) Flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall on Saturday damaged at least 14 displacement camps in the Kherbet al-Jawz area of western Idleb, inundating tents, washing away belongings and affecting hundreds of civilians, Syria’s Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management said.
The ministry said in a statement on its Telegram channel that around 300 families were directly affected after losing their tents or suffering extensive damage to shelter materials, worsening already difficult living conditions for displaced residents.
The camps are located near a seasonal waterway, where intense rainfall over a short period caused floodwaters to surge through the area, leading to collapsed tents, damaged access roads and delays in reaching some sites.
In response, temporary shelters were set up in schools across the western Idleb countryside, coordinated through a joint operations room involving relevant government agencies, to accommodate families who lost their homes.
Syrian Civil Defense teams continue operations to clear debris, reopen damaged roads and assist affected families following overnight evacuations. Authorities said response efforts would continue through Sunday as teams work to limit the humanitarian impact of the flooding.
The Ministry of Defense also said it has placed a number of its bodies, departments and teams on special standby to support other ministries in responding to natural disasters and provide assistance to residents affected by the floods in the Idleb and Lattakia countrysides, as part of coordinated government efforts.
