Damascus, Feb. 5 (SANA) Syrian Transport Minister Yarub Badr held talks with a high-level Russian delegation on how Moscow could help develop Syria’s railway network, as part of joint efforts to modernize transport infrastructure and improve efficiency in the sector.
The delegation was headed by Russian Minister of Construction, Housing and Utilities Irek Faizullin and included Igor Levitin, adviser to the Russian president and a former transport minister, the Syrian Transport Ministry said on its Telegram channel.
The talks reviewed the current condition of railway lines, damage sustained during the war, estimated rehabilitation costs and technical requirements, particularly in signaling, communications and locomotive systems. The two sides also discussed cooperation in maintenance, locomotive overhauls and the potential supply of new locomotives.
The two sides explored proposals for joint projects, financing mechanisms such as grants, loans or investment partnerships, and an integrated project linking the railway network with Tartous Port and phosphate mines to strengthen logistics and support the national economy.
The meeting also focused on training local specialists through dedicated programs and academic scholarships at Russian universities, as part of broader efforts to deepen Syrian-Russian cooperation in the transport sector and support economic recovery.
