Damascus, Jan. 22 (SANA) Syrian Finance Minister Mohammad Yisr Barnieh on Thursday met with United Arab Emirates Ambassador to Syria, Hamad Rashid bin Alwan al-Habsi, to discuss enhancing bilateral banking and financial cooperation.
Held at the ministry headquarters, the talks focused on boosting Emirati investment in Syria’s banking sector and leveraging the UAE’s expertise in digital transformation, government financial services, and public finance management.
Both sides emphasized cooperation on tax-related matters, including value-added tax (VAT), and the exchange of expertise to support financial reforms and stimulate economic activity.
Barnieh stressed the importance of expanding joint cooperation to serve the mutual interests of both countries, praising the strength of bilateral relations and the potential for economic and financial partnership.
Earlier on Thursday, Barnieh met with a team of International Monetary Fund (IMF) experts specializing in government financial statistics. The discussions focused on improving the preparation and quality of public finance data and the mechanisms for publishing them, aiming to enhance policymaking and fulfill Syria’s commitments to international financial institutions.
