Interior Minister urges heightened readiness against ISIS following Palmyra attack

Damascus, Dec. 16 (SANA) Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab convened a high-level security meeting to assess the security situation in Palmyra following a recent terrorist attack. The meeting, which included Brigadier General Sofian Mohammed al-Sheikh Saleh, head of security in the desert region, and other security officials, focused on evaluating current threats and ensuring the safety of civilians.

In a statement released via the Ministry’s Telegram channel, Minister Khattab reviewed the results of the ongoing investigation into the attack and discussed key recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of security units. He stressed the need for seamless coordination between various agencies.

Khattab also emphasized the urgency of improving operational readiness among specialized teams to ensure swift responses to ISIS threats and to maintain stability in the region.

Two days ago, the Ministry’s security forces conducted a decisive operation in Palmyra in response to a deadly ISIS attack on December 13. The attack targeted a security meeting of Syrian Desert leadership, attended by an international coalition delegation. The assault led to the deaths of two U.S. soldiers and a civilian translator, with three U.S. soldiers and two Syrian security personnel injured.
