Syrian Justice Minister: Major steps to strengthen human rights in the judicial sector

Damascus, Dec. 11 (SANA) Syrian Minister of Justice Mazhar Al-Wais affirmed on Thursday that the Ministry’s commitment to upholding the supremacy of human rights and implementing them practically across all Syrian state institutions.

In a statement to SANA, Al-Wais said the Ministry of Justice has taken major steps to strengthen human rights values within the judicial sector. These steps include monitoring prisons, establishing legal offices to secure and guarantee prisoners’ rights, abolishing exceptional courts and exceptional rulings, and advancing transitional justice in a way that ensures the right to litigation for all through fair trials.

The minister noted that holding the Human Rights Day celebration in Syria for the first time reflects the state’s commitment to promoting human rights and integrating them into all official and judicial platforms. He pointed out that the timing of the celebration, two days after the Day of Liberation and Victory, carries an important message that this great victory marks a starting point for elevating human rights in Syria.

The UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10, 1948, establishing the inalienable rights to which every human being is entitled. That date later became recognized as Human Rights Day.

Syria celebrated Human Rights Day yesterday for the first time in its history through a landmark event jointly organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. The ceremony, held at the Conference Palace in Damascus, brought together ministers, ambassadors, UN officials, and representatives of civil society organizations
