Syria joins workshop in Algeria on earthquake risk assessment

The Syrian National Earthquake Center participated in an advanced workshop in Algeria focused on earthquake hazard assessment and training participants on advanced systems.

The event, held Nov. 11-12, was organized by the Arab Center for Earthquake and Natural Disaster Prevention in collaboration with the Global Earthquake Model (GEM) Foundation and brought together experts from 10 Arab countries.

The workshop trained participants on the OpenQuake Engine software, teaching them how to develop precise seismic hazard models and create risk maps to assess the potential impacts of earthquakes.

Jamal Zakkour, director of the National Earthquake Center, said the workshop provided valuable insights into Algeria’s approach to earthquake risk assessment. He added that it fostered the exchange of expertise and modern techniques among participating countries, helping to improve understanding of seismic activity in the region and strengthen disaster response strategies.

Zakkour also noted that the training included creating reliable models to assess earthquake risks and their potential effects, and that Syria’s participation aligns with its efforts to enhance scientific preparedness under the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management’s plan.
