Internal security forces in Hama announced Saturday that its personnel have managed, in coordination with counterterrorism units, to arrest former Air Force Brig. Hamza Mohammed al-Yassin on charges of participating in war crimes and grave violations against civilians during the rule of the defunct regime, officials announced.
Brig. Mulham al-Shantout, head of Hama’s internal security directorate, said the arrest was carried out under a warrant issued by the public prosecutor and followed a “precise security operation.” Preliminary findings indicate that al-Yassin allegedly conducted aerial missions that targeted towns and cities during popular uprisings, and took part in airstrikes during military operations in eastern Idlib and rural Hama that resulted in civilian massacres.
Al-Yassin has been transferred to the competent authorities for further investigation before being referred to the judiciary.
