Journalists and activists launch a website documenting the crimes of the former regime
London, SANA – The British newspaper “The Economist” published a report highlighting the launch of an interactive website titled “Syria’s Prison Museum,” which chronicles the tragedies of torture and oppression experienced by large numbers of Syrians in the prisons of the former regime over the past decades, particularly in Sednaya Prison.
The newspaper states: “Since the fall of the Assad regime, Syrians have begun documenting decades of repression in prisons that emptied their country of life.” The newspaper notes that the new website is a “memorial and criminal archive” and “provides a painful and realistic experience for visitors.” It details the stages of torture and repression to which Syrians were subjected in Sednaya Prison, where the Assad regime used “prisons to detain opponents from various factions and groups.” It notes that over the past 14 years, these prisons have been transformed into “execution sites,” with video testimonies in which survivors tell their stories of the guards’ cruelty.
The newspaper clarified that Sednaya prison was considered by opponents of the former regime to be the most dangerous in a complex journey of torture through interrogation centers in Syria. It notes that inhumane practices and violations within the prison included executions, which were often carried out by hanging in the early hours of the morning. Sometimes, prisoners were starved before execution to facilitate death. In cases of overcrowding that hindered execution by hanging, guards would resort to beating prisoners to death or strangling them.
The British newspaper concluded by saying that the website will be accessible to everyone, from families of missing Syrians to human rights lawyers and historians, anticipating that such a step will contribute to a “moment of accountability” in the future.
