The EU welcomes the ceasefire agreement in Sweida province

Brussels, SANA – The European Union has welcomed the ceasefire agreement in Sweida province and stressed the need to respect Syria’s sovereignty.

In a post on the X platform, EU spokesperson Anouar El Anouni stressed the need to fully respect the ceasefire, calling for an immediate cessation of all violence, the protection of civilians, and immediate steps to prevent incitement and sectarian discourse.

El Anouni pointed out that the Union calls on Israel and all other foreign actors to respect Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The spokesman expressed the Union’s concern over the hundreds of victims of the violence in recent days, reportedly committed by several armed groups against unarmed civilians, calling for all perpetrators of serious violations of international humanitarian law to be held accountable and brought to justice.

“It is time for dialogue and moving forward with a comprehensive transitional process,” El-Anouni added, expressing the Union’s readiness to assist in these efforts and support a peaceful and comprehensive transition process led and owned by Syria.
