Minister of Information: intervention in Sweida was in response to civilians' appeals

Damascus, SANA – Information Minister Hamza al-Mustafa reiterated that the deployment of Defense and Interior Ministry forces into Sweida Governorate was not a military campaign, but rather a response to citizens appeals to stop the deterioration of the situation. The move also came to protect Syria’s unity and political and social stability.

He pointed out that the government has worked to implement the ceasefire despite attempts to violate it by several outlawed armed groups.

In a statement to Al Jazeera Mubasher tonight, al-Mustafa stated that the government has been flexible in addressing local demands, even though conditions were tough, but some parties have reneged on agreements. He stressed that the transitional phase Syria undergoing is sensitive and requires a rational political approach based on the supreme national interests, while recognizing the challenges and risks it faces.

He called on everyone to unite and work for a better future.

Al-Mustaf stressed that the blatant Israeli aggression aims to destabilize Syria, block achieving the transitional justice process in Syria. He said, “Israel believes that its interest lies in keeping Syria weak and divided, that was definite in bombing governmental institutions following the collapse of the Assad regime.” He indicated that the government is committed to protecting all citizens and to spare them the scourge of conflict.

Concerning the National Committee for Investigation and Fact-Finding’s report, al-Mustafa stated that the report revealed that approximately 300 suspects had been referred to the Public Prosecution to initiate accountability proceedings, following four months of investigations conducted on the highest levels of professionalism and relevant standards.

Al-Mustaf stressed the Syrian government’s stance of rejecting any violations under any circumstances, emphasized the importance of unity among Syrians of all ethnicities and backgrounds.

He said, “The Syrian government condemns all violations that have occurred over the past years, whether perpetrated by government agencies or social factions, stated the importance of accountability as part of a political and social contract aimed at preserving the dignity of the Syrian citizen.”

Minister al-Mustafa noted that the fall of the former Assad regime was a historic victory for the Syrian people, but that it was an incomplete victory unless Syria’s geographic and people were united. He called on all Syrians to engage in dialogue and manage differences politically and in good faith. He added, “Syria can only achieve stability through a transitional justice process that ensures criminals are held accountable without igniting new conflicts.”

The Minister of Information noted that protecting citizens is the foundation for protecting the nation, and that Syria looks forward to a prosperous future based on national unity and justice.

He emphasized that the dignity of Syrians and the protection of their lives and rights are not subject to negotiation or compromise, and are fundamental principles of the new Syrian state emerging from the Syrian revolution.
