Turkey to start providing Syria with natural gas on August 2, Minister Bayraktar says

Ankara, SANA – Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar announced that his country will begin supplying Syria with natural gas from Azerbaijan via the Turkish province of Kilis, starting August 2.

“After completing the necessary procedures, we will supply Syria with about 900 megawatts of electricity, covering the needs of 1.6 million homes, and starting from August 2, natural gas coming from Azerbaijan will begin to be exported to the Syrian province of Aleppo via the Turkish province of Kilis”,Anadolu Agency quoted Bayraktar as saying in a statement on Wednesday.

“The natural gas pipeline extending from Kilis Province to Aleppo was completed last May, and the first flow of gas will begin through this pipeline,” Bayraktar said, adding: Turkey will cooperate with Azerbaijan and Qatar at this stage.

He noted that Turkey currently exports electricity to northern Syria and plans to increase this to 280 megawatts via the current lines, explaining that work is underway to reactivate the Birecik-Aleppo line, which had a capacity of approximately 500 megawatts and was previously in use.

The Turkish minister added, “We will be able to generate 1,200 megawatts of electricity using 6 million cubic meters of gas,” emphasizing that energy projects will play a significant role in restoring normalcy to the region and accelerating the return of Syrians to their country.
