Syria, ESCWA launch workshop on developing national accounts system

Damascus, SANA – Syria’s Planning and Statistics Commission, in cooperation with the U.N. Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), on Monday launched a virtual diagnostic workshop on developing the country’s National Accounts System.

The National Accounts System, a unified international framework prepared by the United Nations and global financial institutions, measures economic activity and records production, income, spending, and foreign exchange. It underpins calculations of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and guides economic and development policymaking.

The five-day workshop will analyze sectoral data and review mechanisms for data flow from institutions to the Commission, aiming to strengthen statistical capacity and ensure alignment with the international system. It also seeks to promote cooperation among stakeholders as a key element in modernizing Syria’s planning and statistics framework.

Commission head Anas Salim said a diagnostic report on Syria’s available economic data will be produced at the end of the workshop to help design an advanced national accounts system and establish mechanisms for generating missing data based on scientific principles.

Participants include representatives from the ministries of Economy, Finance, Agriculture, Energy, Education, Transport, Tourism, Health, Information, and others, alongside the Central Bank of Syria, chambers of commerce and industry, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, and the Real Estate Development Authority.
