Syria and Jordan sign a Memorandum of Understanding on establishing the Higher Coordination Council

Syria and Jordan agreed to establish this Council during al-Safadi’s tour to Damascus on the April 17th, 2025.

Both sides agreed on an operational roadmap aiming to achieve short- and long-term goals in a way that serves the common interests of both countries. The roadmap addressed the review of the 1987 Yarmouk River Water Investment Agreement and amending its provisions to ensure that the fair water rights of both countries are taken into account.

The competent ministers discussed projects on supplying Syria with the natural gas via Jordan, electricity interconnection and supply projects, and sharing Jordan’s experience in utilizing renewable energy.

Both sides agreed to hold a ministerial-level meeting next July, followed by technical-level meetings to follow up on these areas of cooperation, as well as to share Jordan’s experience in licensing electricity distribution companies.
