New Syria: The Era of Sovereign Diplomacy

Damascus, SANA- Over the course of the 14 years of Syrian revolution, the Syrian people stood firm against the oppression and massacres committed by the defunct regime and its supporters. They refused compromise or surrender until victory was achieved on December 8, with the departure of criminal Bashar al-Assad and the restoration of their homeland and dignity.

Since then, the new Syria has set out to rebuild the state that was destroyed by the former regime, and has begun to establish international relations based on respect for sovereignty and shared interests.

President Ahmad al-Sharaa stressed that restoring relations must address past mistakes, respect the will of the Syrian people, and serve their interests, noting that Syria will engage with all stakeholders in a principled manner to build a future for Syria rooted in justice, dignity, and sovereignty.

Russia affirmed its support for the positive changes taking place in Syria and its desire to rebuild trust with the Syrian people through concrete measures such as compensation, reconstruction, and recovery.

On February 12, President Sharaa received a phone call from his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in which the Russian president affirmed Moscow’s support for Syria’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and stability. He also extended an official invitation to Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani to visit Russia.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates’ visit to Moscow aims to review previous agreements concluded under the former regime, which were subject to numerous questions, as they lacked transparency and did not take into account Syria’s national interests. Damascus seeks dialogue with Moscow to establish economic and political cooperation that serves Syria’s interests without compromising any of its rights.

Any agreement or cooperation with any country must be based on the principles of mutual respect and shared interests. Reconstruction must be undertaken through the provision of significant investment opportunities that safeguard the interests of the Syrian people and benefit everyone, thereby contributing to strengthening stability in Syria and the region as a whole.
