Birmingham, Aug. 17 (SANA) Britain’s Amy Hunt and Dina Asher-Smith made history at the European Athletics Championships on Sunday, with Hunt becoming the first athlete to win four gold medals at a single edition and Asher-Smith becoming the most decorated athlete in the competition’s 92-year history.
Hunt, 24, helped Britain win the mixed 4×100 metres relay in a European record of 39.97 seconds, adding to her titles in the 100m, 200m and women’s 4x100m relay earlier in the championships.
The world silver medallist told the BBC she was delighted to finish the competition alongside some of her closest friends in the sport.
Asher-Smith, 30, now has eight European gold medals and 11 medals overall after competing in the mixed relay alongside Jeremiah Azu and Zharnel Hughes, as Britain dominated the sprint events on the final night.
Georgia Hunter Bell added another title for the hosts in the 1,500m, giving Britain their ninth gold of the championships. The 32-year-old has also won world indoor and Commonwealth titles this year after previously stepping away from athletics for five years before returning to competition.
Britain’s nine golds were not enough to top the medal table, however, as Italy claimed the final title of the championships in the men’s 4x400m relay, beating the hosts by 0.03 seconds.
Matthew Hudson-Smith took silver for Britain in the relay, earning his ninth European Championships medal and surpassing France’s Christophe Lemaitre as the most decorated male athlete in the competition’s history.
Italy finished top of the standings with 22 medals, including 10 golds, followed by Britain with 19 medals and nine golds. Germany finished with 21 medals and six golds, ahead of the Netherlands with 14 medals and five golds and Norway with six medals, including four golds.
