Homs, May 22 (SANA) The first edition of the “OXYGEN” Marathon was launched in Al-Aydeen Camp in Homs, in an initiative aimed at promoting physical activity, health awareness, and youth participation through sport.
The event was organized by the Directorate of Sports and Youth in cooperation with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), under the slogan “Run for your health and your community,” with participation from youths aged 16 to 30.
The 3-kilometre race started from the UNRWA headquarters and passed through streets inside the camp, as part of efforts to encourage physical activity and strengthen social cohesion among young participants.
Athletics coach Ibrahim Ibrahim told SANA that the marathon carries a social message aimed at reinforcing community bonds and supporting national sports teams with emerging talent, noting the role of sport in raising awareness and promoting Syria’s presence in sporting events.
Event supervisor Kinan Daif said the marathon is part of the “Oxygen” campaign to promote physical and mental wellbeing, adding that logistical preparations included medical services and Civil Defence presence to ensure participant safety.
